Privacy policy

Effective: 29 July 2026

Who is responsible for your data

Light My Reptile LLC is an Oregon limited liability company and the operator of this Website. From 28 July 2026, Light My Reptile LLC is the controller of personal data for which it determines the purposes and means of processing. In this policy, we, us and our mean Light My Reptile LLC.

Before that date, the project was operated by Nathan Burton under the name Burton Studios. Any project-related personal data transferred to Light My Reptile LLC is used for the same purposes for which it was originally provided. The change of operator does not broaden an existing consent or permission.

For privacy questions or requests, email [email protected]. This address is actively monitored on behalf of Light My Reptile LLC.

Scope of this policy

This policy explains how we handle personal data connected with the Light My Reptile Website and direct communications about it. It should be read alongside our Terms & conditions and Cookies & local storage page.

It does not govern websites reached through external links, including retailers, social networks, donation services, source documents or code-hosting services. Those organisations decide how they handle data on their own services.

Planner data kept on your device

The lighting planner runs in your browser. Its current workspace remains in memory unless you enable Remember me. The Website uses local storage for:

  • setups you choose to save, including a setup name and any name you give the animal;
  • the current workspace while Remember me is enabled;
  • your Remember me choice;
  • a desktop or mobile layout override, if you select one; and
  • whether you opened or dismissed the beginner-guide invitation.

The planner does not transmit this information to Light My Reptile LLC. You can remove it using the Website's controls or by clearing stored site data in your browser. Because we do not receive it, we cannot retrieve, correct or delete it for you.

Shared setups are encoded in the fragment of a share link, including any animal name you enter. The fragment is not sent to our server by the browser, but anyone who receives the link can read and load the setup. Plan-sheet exports are generated on your device and are not uploaded by the Website.

Personal data we receive

We currently receive or process the following categories of personal data:

  • Communications: your email address, name if supplied, message and related correspondence when you contact us.
  • Contributions: lamp measurements, charts, photographs, source links, tester or owner credit, permission records and other material you choose to submit.
  • Technical request data: information such as IP address, browser and device type, requested page, and date and time of access that our hosting and security provider processes when your device requests the Website.

We do not intentionally collect sensitive personal data through the Website. Please do not include financial-account details, government identifiers, precise location, health information or other sensitive personal information in an email or submission unless we specifically request it for a stated and lawful reason.

Affiliate links

Light My Reptile LLC participates in retail affiliate programs, including the Associates Program operated by Amazon Services LLC. Some outbound retail links contain an affiliate tag or referral parameter so that qualifying purchases may earn us a commission. No retailer advertising script, cookie or tracker runs on this Website, and those parameters do not give us access to your retail account, browsing history or purchase details.

If you follow an affiliate link, your browser connects to that retailer and provides the information ordinarily included in that request, along with the affiliate or referral parameter. The retailer then handles information under its own privacy notice.

Why we use personal data

We use the relevant data described above to:

  • deliver, secure, maintain and troubleshoot the Website;
  • respond to questions, feedback, rights requests and support enquiries;
  • review submitted lamp data and, where the rights holder has given permission, add it to the public catalogue with the agreed credit;
  • document permissions and the sources of published measurements;
  • prevent misuse, protect legal rights and comply with legal obligations; and
  • evaluate and improve the Website and its information.

Where a law requires a legal basis, we process data as necessary to respond to your request or perform an agreement with you, for our legitimate interests in operating and improving the Website, to comply with a legal obligation, or with your consent. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time, without affecting processing that was lawful before withdrawal.

Who receives personal data

We disclose personal data only as reasonably necessary:

  • technical request data is processed by providers that host, deliver and protect the Website, currently including Cloudflare;
  • communications and contribution records may be handled through our email, file-storage and collaboration providers and by people helping us respond or review a submission;
  • approved contribution material and the agreed tester or owner credit may be published on the Website;
  • relevant data may be provided to professional advisers, insurers or authorities where reasonably necessary to protect rights, address a claim or comply with law; and
  • relevant records may be disclosed to a prospective purchaser and transferred to a successor as part of a merger, reorganisation, financing or sale of the Website or business, subject to appropriate confidentiality and continued protection.

We do not receive or disclose planner data that remains only in your browser. We require service providers acting for us to handle personal data for the agreed purpose and with appropriate protection.

No sale, targeted advertising or significant profiling

We do not sell personal data. We do not process personal data for targeted advertising or for profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. We also do not use personal data for automated decision-making.

Because we do not carry out those activities, there is currently nothing to opt out of and an opt-out preference signal does not need to change how the Website operates. If that changes, we will update this policy and provide the required controls before beginning the new processing.

Retention

Planner information in local storage remains on your device until you remove it or your browser removes it. We do not control its retention.

We keep communications only while reasonably necessary to respond, maintain relevant business records, resolve disputes and meet legal or security obligations. Contribution material and records of its source, credit and permission may be retained while the material is used in the catalogue and afterwards where reasonably needed to document that use. Hosting and security providers retain technical records according to their settings and retention schedules. Limited copies may remain temporarily in protected backups.

International processing

Light My Reptile LLC is based in the United States. If you contact us or submit material from another country, your personal data will be processed in the United States and may be processed in other countries where our service providers operate.

Where applicable law requires safeguards for an international transfer, we use an available lawful mechanism and appropriate protections, such as an adequacy decision or approved contractual clauses.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational safeguards appropriate to the nature and volume of the personal data we handle. Access is limited to people and providers that need the data for the purposes described above. Information stored only in your browser is protected by the security of your own device, browser and account.

No internet service can be guaranteed completely secure. If you believe personal data handled by Light My Reptile LLC has been misused, lost or accessed without authorisation, please contact us promptly.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live and the law that applies, you may have the right to:

  • ask whether we process your personal data and obtain access to it;
  • request the categories of data we process and certain recipients of it;
  • correct inaccurate personal data;
  • request deletion of personal data;
  • receive a portable copy of personal data you provided;
  • restrict or object to certain processing; and
  • withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

Email [email protected] with the subject Privacy request and describe what you want us to do. You do not need to create an account. We may request information reasonably necessary to verify your identity and authority, and an authorised agent may submit a request where applicable law permits. We aim to respond within 45 days and will follow any different deadline required by applicable law.

These requests apply to personal data we hold. Information stored only in your browser must be managed on your device.

Appeals and complaints

If we deny a privacy request and applicable law gives you a right to appeal, reply to the decision or email [email protected] with the subject Privacy appeal. Explain why you believe the decision should be reconsidered. We will review the appeal separately and respond within the period required by applicable law.

Oregon residents can learn about complaints through the Oregon Department of Justice. If another privacy regulator has authority over the processing, you may also complain to that regulator. In the United Kingdom, this is the Information Commissioner's Office.

Children's privacy

The Website does not knowingly collect personal data online from children under 13. Planner data remains on the user's device. A child under 13 should not email us or submit material unless a parent or legal guardian does so on the child's behalf. If you believe a child has provided personal data to us without appropriate permission, contact us so we can review and delete it where required.

Cookies, local storage and future features

The Website's application code does not currently set analytics, advertising or behavioural-tracking cookies. Its local-storage entries, purposes, retention and controls are listed on the Cookies & local storage page.

If we introduce an account, payment, analytics, marketing or other feature that changes how personal data is handled, we will update the relevant notice before the new processing begins and request consent where required.

Changes and contact

We may update this policy to reflect a change in the Website, our practices or applicable law. The effective date will be revised, and we will give additional notice of a material change where reasonably appropriate. A change will not retroactively broaden how we use personal data already collected without another lawful basis or any consent that is required.
